lesson planning panic and ham buns

School starts on Monday!  Well, parent teacher conferences start on Monday and school starts on Tuesday, but whatever.  I've ordered my workbooks, made up my gradebooks, organized seating charts, set up my class and my desk and my calendar and made forms and passes and all kinds of stuff...and have chosen (almost) no music and written no plans.  I'm severely lacking in motivation, and the closer I get to panic the more I avoid it.  Thus, blogging.  I WILL get it done, and the situation is not as dire as it appears, but I'm still in quite a tizzy of terror.  It won't be that bad...right? Anyways, the purpose of getting on here today (for the first time in far too long) was to share another recipe.  This one is stolen from a wonderful neighbor and adapted slightly. These ham buns are DELICIOUS and easy.  I've made them twice this week for friends who came over. Ham Buns 1/2 cup butter, softened 1 small onion, diced up into itty bitty pieces ...

frustrations of flirting

Image
"If I'm overtly flirting with someone, they've already been friend-zoned."  - Annie Flirting is fun, there's no doubt.  Flirting with someone who flirts back is even more fun.  But Annie has a point - it's easiest to flirt with someone you don't really like "that way."  When you know someone is just a friend, it's easy to be a little outrageous, because there's no risk.  You're friends, and you're unlikely to spoil that friendship with some silly flirting.  But when it's someone you like?  Whole 'nother story. I called another friend today to pass the time on my long drive home, and she brought up the same topic.  Why is it so hard for us to flirt with someone we like?  I think there are two reasons.  One, and this applies to everyone, is the risk.  When flirting with someone whose interest you desire, you have something to lose.  This could be your one chance to prove how interesting you are and convince them th...

Wildlife Adventures

Image
So, I'm housesitting. I'm watching a menagerie: birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, the whole shebang. Today has not been my day. The lizards get to eat crickets, which means I get to pick up crickets with my hands and feed them. Gross. With gloves, it's not that bad, but it does mean reaching into a box swarming with them and counting out the right number. Ew. I'm currently resentful that the crickets decided to up and die today before I could more happily provide for their demise by lizard, and that I had to go buy more, and then stick my hand into an even larger swarm. The lizards were happy though. Then, as I went to feed everyone else their dinner, I noticed that one of the parrots was missing. WHAT. The large, main door to her cage was open. I've never touched this door, doing everything instead by way of the food and water doors. So, I pulled on thick gloves, grabbed a towel, and went parrot hunting. I'd been warned of where she...

Day 10: Something I'm Afraid Of

Image
Though I generally do not consider myself a fearful person, there were many ideas that crossed my mind when starting today's entry. I am afraid I will be single forever. I have an irrational fear of pool vacuums. Actually, I am afraid of most anything underwater. I am afraid I will never get married - wait, did I mention that already? I am afraid I may never finish school. Or at least it feels that way. I am afraid of bugs. However, I didn't feel like writing much about those. Well, I thought about the fear of never getting to spend the rest of my life with my true love, but I already know all the cliches and reassurances by heart - and usually believe them - so why waste my breath typing? I am afraid of not playing . Sounds odd, perhaps. But I love to play! And unfortunately, it's not something I get to do often. I'm not talking about board games or toys or with my kitten. I'm talking person to person - grown-up to grown-up - playing. When we're little, ...
