it lives!

Oh, my poor blog, how I have neglected you! Today was such a lovely day that I decided to drive home the long way.  When you remember that I work 30 miles from home, you realize that the long way is really long.  But it was so worth it!  The sky was that lovely autumnal shade of blue.  Maybe it's just me, but I see the sky differently during different seasons, and there's a special hue for both sky and clouds that just means it's fall.  Anyways, the weather was so gorgeous that I didn't want to waste a drive on the freeway.  Since I work so far away, the "wild desert" is only two miles north of my normal route.  Not terribly wild, but you can drive without stoplights or seeing houses for quite some time.  It was a great choice. So, student teaching and working and job hunting and trying to sleep, eat, and have a life have kept me rather insane.  I'm really looking forward to three days off next week for Thanksgiving!  I realized durin...

the only good reason to go to Tucson

I love surprises! I'm sure it stems in part from the fact that I am rather difficult to surprise (scare is another matter entirely). I love when you get to plot sneakily for days or weeks, nearly bursting with a secret that you know will be better if you keep it but that you just yearn to tell so the person will know how happy they get to be. I have this difficulty with presents, parties, rainbow cakes , etc. For Labor Day, we decided we would go down to Tucson to surprise Ryan. We got ahold of his roommate - and his mother, who nearly spoiled it! - and managed to set everything up is surreptitious secrecy. Road trips with the Knights are fun - both cars independently sang Disney songs the whole way down. It was fabulous. We arrived much earlier than planned, so we strolled around and ate some lunch, mocking U of A as much as we could. notice Drew proudly sporting his Arizona State shirt! Back at the apartment, Ryan arrived slightly earlier than we were expecting, so there wa...

by the light of the moon

I live very far from most of my friends. Average about 30 miles. Since they all live much closer to each other, I find myself driving long stretches of freeway quite frequently. Sometimes, this drives me nuts. Gas prices are outrageous, and if the music just isn't shuffling right, it can be a boring drive. This week had a full moon, which made the drives so much more enjoyable. On Tuesday, on my drive to Bex's for the Truth Project, the sun was setting in the west, lighting the sky on fire. Out one window, I had a fluorescent orange glow shining from behind the mountains. Out the other, the moon was luminescent in a lavender sky fading to dusk. It was a gorgeous balance, the time of change. Wednesday, I was driving to Shantel's for swimming and movies and the moon was full, still hanging low on the horizon, pale yellow in a deep midnight teal sky. At one point it silhouetted the mountains I was passing, setting their rugged outline stark against the sky. I do so l...
